Services
Aviation
Airfield pavement investigation, construction oversight and quality assurance testing for runway, taxiway and apron projects across the Intermountain West and California.
Airfield Geotechnical Investigation
Airfield pavements carry concentrated gear loads over long, unforgiving runs, so the subsurface picture has to be right before design begins.
We perform geotechnical field investigations across runway, taxiway and apron alignments, and develop the construction recommendations that follow from them.
Construction Oversight
Our engineers and technicians stay on the job through construction, observing the work against the recommendations and resolving the conditions that only show up once the grade is open.
QA/QC Materials Testing
Quality assurance and quality control materials testing runs through our own AASHTO-accredited laboratory in Bluffdale, backed by field technicians carrying UDOT, ACI and ICC certifications.
The same lab that supports our highway and structural work handles airfield concrete, asphalt and soils.
Pavement Management
Beyond new construction, we evaluate existing airfield pavements and advise on maintenance and rehabilitation priorities as surfaces age.
Airport Infrastructure
Airfield work rarely stops at the pavement. We support the buildings and landside infrastructure that go in alongside it.
Representative Projects
Recent runway construction projects include Canyonlands Regional Airport in Moab, Green River Municipal Airport in Utah, Grand Junction Regional Airport and Craig Municipal Airport in Colorado, and Oxnard Airport in California — alongside taxiway, apron, hardstand and hangar work at airports across the region.
Earlier, GeoStrata handled all laboratory and field materials testing for the reconstruction of the Wake Island Airport runway in the western Pacific, a roughly $200M project running about two years.
Who runs it
The Aviation Division is led by Scott Richards, PE, PG, a senior geotechnical engineer who also manages our Grand Junction, Colorado office. He is a registered professional engineer in Colorado and Utah and a professional geologist in Utah, with more than 25 years of geological and geotechnical experience.
